When Leadership Becomes Presence

At some point in life, many people notice a subtle shift.

The impulse to organize everything, explain everything, or lead from the front begins to soften. Not because the desire to serve disappears — but because another way of serving begins to appear.

Many spiritual traditions assume that maturity means teaching more, leading more, explaining more.

The teacher stands at the front of the room.
The guide organizes the journey.
The leader helps others find their way.

But over time, something surprising often happens.

In the later stages of life and spiritual practice, the role can shift toward something quieter — and, in some ways, more profound.

Instead of speaking more, one begins to speak less. Instead of directing the process, one begins to hold the space in which the process unfolds.

The work becomes the work of witnessing, grounding, and allowing insight to emerge rather than directing it.

A Shift in the Arc

Over the past few years, I’ve begun to notice this shift unfolding in my own life.

The first years of retirement still carried the energy of transition. There was writing to do, gatherings to organize, and conversations to initiate. In many ways, the rhythm still resembled the leadership and pastoral life that had shaped earlier decades.

But something has gradually changed as I move into what feels like the second five-year arc of retirement.

The impulse to initiate, organize, and lead from the front has slowly softened. Not disappeared — but softened.

In its place, something quieter is emerging.

Rather than asking What should I start next?, the question has slowly become: What is trying to emerge if I simply remain present?

Pilgrimage as Teacher

Part of this shift has unfolded through a series of pilgrimages and retreats over the past few years.

In Japan, I found myself following a quiet inner pull connected to my grandmother’s spirit — a journey that eventually led me to Lake Biwa, a place that felt unexpectedly familiar and grounding.

In Peru, walking among the ancient stones of Machu Picchu and later standing before the mysterious gateway of Aramu Muru, I sensed how certain places seem to mark thresholds — moments where one phase of life quietly gives way to another.

In Joshua Tree, through several retreats among the vast desert landscapes and ancient boulder formations, the rhythm of silence itself seemed to teach. The land invites a kind of listening that does not require words.

And in Egypt, walking through temples layered across thousands of years, one becomes aware of the long arc of human seeking. Civilizations rose, faded, and were rediscovered beneath the sands of time — yet the human search for meaning continues.

In a way, this season of life has begun to feel like a kind of inner archaeology — gently brushing away the sands of time to rediscover what has quietly been forming within us all along.

Across these journeys, a similar message seemed to appear again and again:

Wisdom does not always appear as activity.
Often it appears as presence.

Becoming a Breath Anchor

Around this same time, a phrase surfaced during a conversation with a friend who had been reflecting through intuitive work.

The phrase was simple: “Breath anchor.”

At first, I wasn’t quite sure what to do with it.

But the more I sat with it, the more it seemed to describe the shift I had already been sensing.

A breath anchor does not control the breath.
It simply holds steady so that breathing can happen.

In a group setting, a breath anchor is the person whose calm presence helps the room settle. Conversations deepen not because they direct them, but because they hold the space in which insight can arise.

This is a different form of leadership.

It is quieter and often less visible, yet deeply stabilizing.

Many spiritual traditions eventually recognize this role. Elders are not always the ones who speak the most. Often, they are the ones whose presence itself becomes orienting.

The Elder Path

What I am beginning to understand is that this phase of life may not be about doing more.

It may be about embodying more.

Living more quietly.
Listening more deeply.
Allowing life itself to speak.

This does not mean withdrawing from community. Far from it.

But the nature of participation shifts.

Instead of shaping every conversation, one helps hold the circle in where the conversation can unfold.

Instead of directing insight, one trusts that insight can arise naturally when people gather in a space of openness and curiosity.

In many ways, this feels deeply aligned with what the Spiritual Life Foundation has always hoped to cultivate — a place where thoughtful exploration, shared reflection, and spiritual curiosity can flourish.

A Continuing Invitation

So this season is not a retreat from engagement.

It is simply a different way of engaging.

Less about initiating and organizing.

More about presence, listening, and shared discovery.

If there is a thread connecting the pilgrimages, retreats, and reflections of recent years, it may be this:

The spiritual journey does not end in mastery.

It deepens into presence.

And sometimes the most meaningful role we can play within a community is simply to remain steady enough for something deeper to emerge among us.

Perhaps this is one way of understanding the quiet work of the elder.

Or, in the language that recently came to me — to become a breath anchor.

Many of us eventually find ourselves entering seasons of life where the questions change.
We may speak less, yet listen more closely.
We may organize less, yet notice that our presence carries a different kind of influence.

Perhaps part of spiritual maturity is learning to recognize these shifts when they come — and trusting that wisdom sometimes appears not through greater activity, but through deeper presence.

From that place, the invitation to gather, reflect, and explore together continues — simply from a quieter center.
