Lately I've been noticing a pattern that has quietly woven itself through my life. As a kid, I was always organizing pickup football, baseball, and basketball games, along with neighborhood bike rides. In high school, it was dances, camping, and youth socials. In college, it became ski trips and camping adventures. During my years in ministry, it evolved into youth camps, retreats, and annual hikes to the top of Half Dome—seven summers in a row. Today, that same thread continues through Open Circle gatherings, Joshua Tree retreats, and journeys to places like Peru. At first, I thought I simply enjoyed bringing people together. Now I wonder if it has always been something more. As I reflected on this, I realized I'm probably not alone. Many of us have brought people together in our own ways—through family trips, camping adventures, reunions, celebrations, shared meals, book clubs, or simply opening our homes. Or perhaps you know those friends who always seem to be the ones gathering people, planning the outing, or inviting everyone over. We may not have thought much about it at the time, but perhaps something deeper was unfolding in those moments than simply getting together. These gatherings were never primarily about teaching deep life lessons or seeking profound insights. They weren't about arriving at answers or trying to create meaningful moments. They were simply opportunities to share life together—places where something could unfold naturally through conversation, silence, laughter, challenge, beauty, and discovery. Ironically, that was often when the most meaningful moments found us. The mountain became our teacher. The desert became our teacher. The journey became our teacher. Perhaps that is how life itself works. We often imagine growth comes through dramatic moments or profound insights. More often, I think it grows through ordinary experiences that slowly shape us from the inside out: a conversation over breakfast, a hike with friends, watching the stars in silence, walking unfamiliar streets in another country, sitting together in a circle where no one has all the answers—or simply laughing together at something wonderfully ridiculous. The destination matters, of course, but it is rarely the whole point. Something within us begins to awaken as we travel together. We discover strengths we didn't know we had. We become aware of assumptions we've carried for years. We begin to see the world—and perhaps ourselves—with fresh eyes. Many of those discoveries don't become clear until much later, when we look back and recognize a pattern connecting experiences that once seemed completely unrelated. Perhaps that is one of life's quiet gifts. We are all pilgrims in one way or another. Some journeys take us across deserts, mountains, or oceans. Others lead us through seasons of joy, loss, uncertainty, healing, and new beginnings. Most of us experience both. None of us makes the journey alone. As I reflect on my own life, I feel grateful for every person who has shared part of the path with me. Whether it was an afternoon bike ride, a weekend retreat, a climb up Half Dome, or a pilgrimage halfway around the world, each gathering became part of a much larger journey of becoming. Maybe that is what community is really about. Not having all the answers. Not arriving at the same destination. But walking together long enough for life to reveal something beautiful within each of us. May we remain open to the journeys before us, the companions beside us, and the quiet ways life continues to shape us along the path.
