There was a season in my life when progress was easy to recognize. Over the years, I had the privilege of helping lead four major church building projects. For congregations our size, they were significant undertakings. Every week there was something new to see. Foundations were poured. Walls rose. Roofs appeared. The work was visible, and so was the hope. It was easy to believe that something meaningful was happening because there was tangible evidence before our eyes. Today's world feels very different. Many of us long to see signs that humanity is moving in a healthier direction. Instead, we often encounter division, uncertainty, and the same old patterns repeating themselves. It is understandable to wonder whether anything is really changing. Perhaps the question is not whether transformation is happening, but how we recognize it. Nature reminds us that not all growth is visible. Some of its most important work happens beneath the surface. Roots deepen long before branches reach toward the sky. Rich soil is formed through countless unseen relationships. We rarely notice these quiet processes, yet without them nothing lasting could grow. Perhaps our lives—and even our world—move through seasons like this. Many people are discovering that they no longer need to react to every wave of fear, outrage, or confusion. The noise has not disappeared, but something within them is becoming steadier. Rather than being swept away by every current, they are learning to remain present, grounded, and compassionate. This kind of transformation is difficult to measure. It will never make the evening news. Yet it quietly changes the quality of every conversation, every family, every community, and every act of service. When we become less reactive, fear has less to feed upon. When we become more grounded, wisdom has more room to emerge. Perhaps what we need most right now is not reassurance that everything is getting better, but a wiser way of recognizing progress when it does not announce itself. The deepest work of Spirit is not always dramatic. Sometimes it unfolds quietly within us before it ever becomes visible around us. Like roots beneath the earth, it prepares the way for new life long before anyone sees the first green shoot break through the surface. May we have the patience to trust the roots, the courage to remain grounded, and the wisdom to recognize that some of the most important transformations are already taking place—even when they cannot yet be seen.
